Examples Of Greed In Macbeth

William Shakespeare's play Macbeth explores many ideas involving power, greed, ambition, karma, and dark forces. These concepts appear in your daily life, but maybe not to the degree that they were shown in macbeth. Especially things like the dark forces included within this play (witches, talk of fate, religion) and the greed that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth showed throughout the duration of this piece of writing. Macbeth was largely shaped by other people and in the beginning especially he seemed to follow his wifes wants more than his own intuition. An idea that really stuck out to me was how going about achieving your goals can completely alter your identity, especially when your goal is becoming something you originally weren’t.

In the play Macbeth, two of the main characters had goals that were strongly shown, but the purposes behind these goals were not clear whatsoever. It seemed that Macbeth wanted to be king just to be King, seeing as previous to being a king he was already a well respected war general and thane of two areas. As well as Macbeth having little reason to be king, to achieve this unnecessary goal he also needed to hurt the people he was closest to, as well as people who had done nothing to deserve to die. Also, he becomes obsessed with the idea of being king without knowing the implications and responsibilities it comes with. Macbeth often deemed it necessary to murder off people in this play to get what he wanted, even though it would usually just make things messier, causing him to murder more people. After “needing” to murder people various Macbeth goes from being extremely hesitant and regretful in murdering someone to something that he can easily brush off, which I believe was a keen example of his identity and morals changing on the way to him becoming king and trying to get a clean slate.
