Many people in today’s society tend to treat global warming and the effect it has on all of our lives, as a joke. James R. Lee does a fabulous job, in his article titled “Global Warming is Just the Tip of the Iceberg”, talking about the effects of Global Warming and how it can lead to warfare and many conflicts of the 21st century. The article gives three different reasons for believing global warming could lead to warfare, the first being a conflict that could arise from a shortage of products. As temperatures begin to get warmer, ice caps begin to melt which means the amount of open land will continue to decline. The second reason the author gives is the opposite of shortage. Lee is an assistant professor at the American University School of International Service along with being the director of the Mandala Projects. His article “Global Warming is Just the Tip of the Iceberg” was published in the Washington Post in January of 2009. While stating his facts and what he believes will happen if global warming continues the way it does, he provides each reason for thinking the way he does with historical evidence. For example, when Lee talks about the first conflict and how it can arise from scarcity, he begins by talking about displacement. Not only does he describe what would happen if displacement occurred but he begins by explaining that it can happen suddenly or slowly while using examples of regions of Northern Africa that soon became the Nile and Niger rivers, and Hurricane Katrina causing such a large impact on these lands (cite).
