Both Raphael Lemkin and the United Nations stated that a genocide involves “a conspiracy” or “intent” to annihilate a group of people based on “national, ethnical, racial, or religious” background (“Genocide”, UN). As white settlers emigrated to California, their inveterate fear of the Native Americans, their belief in the “savagery, depravity, and racial inferiority” of the Natives, and their desire for the Natives’…
The ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia came as a shock to many around the world. Thousands of people were slaughtered not only by the Serbian government, but also by their neighbors and former friends. Although a tragedy the genocide was not much of a surprise looking at the history of the region. Tensions had been running high between the Serbs, Croats, Bosnians and Ethnic Albanians. The reason for the Genocide was similar to many before it; kill the unwanted minority in order to create a pure race and space for that race to exist.…
At the start of the 2015-2016 school year, Chiitaanibah Johnson, a sophomore student at California State University, was sitting in her U.S. History class when the professor allegedly denied that the term genocide should be used to encompass the tragedies that were brought upon the Native Americans. Johnson being of Navajo and Maidu descent especially took offense and decided that in the next class she would bring research to refute his claim. In the next class, the debate between Johnson and her professor became so heated that the professor expelled Johnson from his class. This story made headlines, however, there is still the unanswered question: Should what happened to the Native Americans be considered genocide?…
While there has been extensive studies done by scholars, psychologists, and through personal interviews, as demonstrated in this research paper, compared to Holocaust survivors, with regards to the current state of research there has be no incentive to obtain personal information on Armenian Genocide survivors as the Turkish government has denied the atrocities in addition to the fact that many survivors have passed away long before Holocaust survivors. As such, the existing state of literature consists more information on trauma and its effects on Holocaust survivors compared to Armenian Genocide survivors. The research below consists of literature from psychologists and scholars and personal accounts from survivors both from the Holocaust…
The Ignored North Korean Genocide The genocide in North Korea has been happening for decades, evidence of these camps has been traced back to the end of the Korean War in the 1950’s. Ever since the first reports of these labor camps, the U.N has done little to nothing to stop them as well as the death happening inside of them and that is why the genocide in North Korea is being ignored by the rest of the world. The things happening in North Korea have not been labeled officially as “genocide” by the United Nations, however studies from the United Nations have shown the terrible genocide-like acts that are being committed in North Korea. “A commission of Inquiry (COI) established by the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), chaired by…
Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Genocide happened in the past, and is still happening today. Although it seems like the worst ones happened in the past it can still happen today. The U.N was brought together as explained for that reason which is show in a cartoon. In the cartoon, one of the boxes shows the logo of the U.N saying how any conflicts are unacceptable.…
It is impossible to properly address America’s ongoing disparities without knowing their catastrophes about genocide of indigenous peoples, the enslavement of the African, gender inequality, and colonization. The genocide of indigenous peoples is an ongoing issue among the white people because they are trying to justify their action in order to make themselves feel less guilty. Some new white scholar claimed that the suffering of the Native People and the massacres was ethnic cleaning and it was not a genocide. According to American History Review, the “Old World” diseases such as diphtheria, influenza, malaria, measles, scarlet fever, smallpox, typhus, and whooping cough were intentionally targeted to the Native People and killed great numbers…
Before the reasons for why people take part in genocide, one last thing about the causes of genocide will be presented. This will be the eight stages of genocide. It is important to talk about the stages of genocide as it plays a crucial part in the understanding of basics of genocide and its causes. The ten stages of genocide are classification, symbolization, discrimination dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, persecution, extermination, and denial (Stanton). In classification, this is where people establish the different groups by race, ethnicity, religion, or nationality.…
Michael Lackey, a professor of English and author of African American Atheists and Political Liberation: A Study of the Socio-Cultural Dynamics of Faith, published the article “The Moral Conditions for Genocide in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness” in the Winter 2005 edition of College Literature. He has focused his studies on the subject of religion, atheism, and politics — all of which he uses within this article as a method to deconstruct the novella by Joseph Conrad. His various publications have further supported his authority on these subjects and gives him the ethos to create the controversial argument contained within this article. The main purpose within the article is to deconstruct the presence or lack of morality, especially in…
Genocide:"a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves" (What Is “Genocide”). This invasion is considered a genocide because it was a mass killing of a specific ethnic group. The Indonesian genocide was an invasion by Indonesia on East Timor. East Timor is a country that was a Portuguese colony up until 1975 when the country gained its independence from Portugal and Indonesian control in the West. Right before the invasion, President Ford was reported to have visited Indonesia, which has been assumed to have symbolized his permission for Indonesia to invade the East Timor country.…
What is African genocide? This is the question I came into the research symposium asking myself. The African genocide was the deliberate killing of a large group of people in Africa in 1994. According to the panel discussion the African genocide was started because of power struggle. An example was used that referred to the deliberate killing of Jews done by German Nazis in WWII.…
The cultural genocide at the hands of the Indian residential school system along with historic and present day oppression and abuse is a blood stain on Canadian culture and government. The government has made steps to atone and reconcile for the destruction it brought upon the First Nations community, however, I do not think enough has been done or ever will be done as long as the oppressor’s government institution is in place. It will ultimately be left up to the First Nations people to come together as a unit to rebuild the structure of their community. Indian Residential School System The Indian residential schools (IRS) were domestic terrorism hubs and locations ordained by the Canadian government and churches which were operated and enforced…
For hundreds of years women were called the spoils of war, sexual violence was seen as a consequence of the armed conflict that would occur. These occurrences were not controlled or prevented by any government globally. However, in the last thirty years we as a international community have witnessed enormous advances to protect gender rights of women in wars. The international criminal tribunal for Yugoslavia and the International Criminal tribunal for Rwanda have successfully categorized sexual violence as a crime of war, crimes against humanity, and methods of torture or a form of enslavement. These developments show the progress that we as citizens unite together in the effort to recognise and fight serious violations of human rights: sexual…
Law evolves and expands through the setting of precedents; however, it is crucial to understand the intricacies of the definition of genocide is the first step to understanding the law as well as grasping its evolvement through legal judgements outlined in cases before tribunals and courts. Article 1 of the UN convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the crime of Genocide states: “The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and punish”. (http://www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=a/res/260(III) ) Article 1 of the convention significantly emphasises genocide as a crime whether it be in times of peace or war. In…
The United Nations is the principal international organisation for the maintenance of world order and the prevention and resolution of global conflict. It holds the responsibility for almost every aspect of international affairs however this responsibility is not easily enforceable resulting in many questions the effectiveness of the organisation. This essay will outline the primary aims of the United Nations before exploring the key reasons the United Nations may be deemed ineffective; these being hesitation to intervene, lack of money and manpower, enforceability and state sovereignty and finally the Security Council. In order to contextualise these ideas, this paper will primarily focus on the Rwandan Genocide. The United Nations (UN)…
