The gender inequality issue is worth exploring as, lately; this topic has come up more frequently in sport than ever before. Women are becoming more vocal on gender issues. And, they’re becoming more involved in closing a gender gap within sports, becoming a major part of the sporting industry on and off the field. Slowly changing over time, sport is no longer “a man’s game.” Still, as women drive forward with inequality issues, women and women’s sport often take a back seat to men at the steering wheel.
From the advent of sport, and in particular due to university sport, men have always had the upper hand over sports, and determined where sports are going, how they are played, who can play them and so on. Male athletes dominate participation in sports and the development of not only of the sport itself but the industry as a whole. In spite of this, women have persevered. Women have taken a stand on their role in sports and how they can contribute and participate alongside of men. Alternative views, approaches, values, attitudes, capabilities, experiences and knowledge can bring positive development and diversity to the sport and management surrounding it. If women were able to be leaders, be part of the sport and part of the organization, this could make a positive impact on the topic of gender inequality. This could also help the attitude towards woman participation in the sporting industry; seeing that women can be top decision-makers, top elite athletes, and that their capabilities match those of men. Women are often forced to stay in sports “targeted” to women because that is the “norm”, but why isn’t there more initiative into breaking these norms and exploring the possibilities that women can offer the sport
