The film The King of Masks (1996), describes an elderly artist who has extraordinary skill that is able to change masks frequently on-stage named as the king of masks, living alone, wants to find a boy (the skill can only be passed to male inheritor) to pass his skills to him.
The story begins when once in a human trafficking market, the king of masks bought a boy named Gou Wa, they kept each other alive from then and the king of mask loved Gou Wa very much which he treated him as his grandson so that he intended to teach and pass his skills to him. Gou Wa walked on street searching for helps everyday and was anxious for her grandfather after she was informed and was almost blind because of spending her days in tears. Luckily, she got helps from the army commander through performing a Sichuan opera named as “goddess of mercy” in commander’s birthday banquet, with the using of skills that she studied from her grandfather without his permission. An impressive scene in this opera was that Guanyin (Gou Wa acted) sacrifice her life for the sake of saving her father, Gou Wa’s performance was fully and delightfully which she expressed her true loves and her filial characteristics to her grandfather; consequently, the commander was largely touched by the scenario and decided to redress an injustice for her grandfather. The king of masks was convicted to be innocent and Gou Wa was earnestly wiping the deck when he went back from the jail to the ship that they lived on, he excitedly yelled her name and they were embracing together for long and at the end, the king of masks changed the traditional perception of gender discrimination and formally accepted Gou Wa as his …show more content…
However, under the circumstances of feudalism tradition notion, it is widely to see the inequality existing between men and women in the previous society in Chinese history, and this inequality not only reflects in strangers that in daily life but also overrides every valuable kinship, particularly in the film “ the king of masks” which represents painful scenes of the true love and regretful from grandfather to his granddaughter, Gou Wa, we should introspection about the painful that this film aims to spread about the undeveloped society which within the obsolete notion of gender discrimination. It is unimaginative how a father treat nicely to his son whereas abuse his daughter in the old society, it is a pity that this patriarchal ideology even appears in many families in modern society. In Helen Keller’s book “Three Days to See”, she stated that “I am happiness because I am the daughter of my mother who gives her love to me unconditionally; at the same time, I am happiness since I am a mother of my daughter and I give my best love to her”; therefore, we can see that there are no boundaries or gender discrimination among men and women in foreign parents or families, they seemly have paid more attention to the true
