95% of gang members are high school dropouts (Towns). People join gangs for different reasons. Some join gangs to feel pride in being a part of something bigger than themselves. Other people may join for support in order to be able to provide for themselves and their family. A great amount of peer pressure may be involved when joining a gang, which can make it hard to focus on school. If someone is struggling with everyday needs, then they will put their education after the needs are meant, and may even forget about going to school completely. Because of all the crime around gangs, it can affect the neighborhood they live in. Being scared of leaving the house is going to be hard to have the desire to attend school. People need to be nudged in the right direction in order to want or desire an education when in an unstable environment.
