Friendship is one of the major themes in The Book Thief. To start with, trust and support are what defines friendship. An example of this is when Hans returns the favour to Erik, Max’s father, for saving him back in the war by helping to hide Max, a Jew, from the Nazi’s. This example proves, trust and support can be the key to a healthy relationship because without these two skills, the person who is struggling will feel helpless and closed off. Also, good mutual relationships between other people is what keeps the characters going through their current circumstances. To demonstrate, Liesel is telling Max a summary about her day of how she scores a goal in soccer. Max asks her, “Could you go up and tell me how the weather looks? “ (249). This
