The American Revolution was a war of principles fought between Patriots and Loyalists. For example, the Loyalists believe in neutrality, peace, negotiation, against treason, feared of loss land, and the brutality of war. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, a family quarrels over what side is right. Loyalist or Patriot.

First, Life’s death induces Tim’s neutrality. For example, Tim discovers that his brother has been taken by cowboys on their way home from Verplanks Point. “In June of that year, 1777, we found out that father was dead...it wasn’t a rebel prison ship. It was a British one” (204). Time expects that his father would die from the cowboys because of theft threatened before by the cowboys. Instead, Loyalist kill him. We learn that loyalty, trust, and devotion isn't valued or rewarded. Why be loyal to a side that is dishonest? The reason changed his mind about Neutrality is because of how the loyalists are deceptive, brutal, killing, hypocrites, no innocence, and because of those things, Tim decides to chose neutrality!

Second, Sam’s unjust death sways Tim to become neutral. For instance, Sam is executed for stealing his own cattle. “He went on jerking with flames on his chest until another soldier shot him

So therefore, Time becomes neutral in the end. Secondly, the irony in Sam’s death was the he had stole his own cattle. He was completely innocent and because of that, Tim was sad because he was betrayed by the patriots and so were the loyalist, but Tim still goes neutral.
