Examples Of Free Will In Romeo And Juliet

For all of written history we have had a question that has been debated by many scholars and laymen as well. Is it fate that controls our destiny or the actions we decide to do? I myself am on the side of free will. The play Romeo and Juliet demonstrates this quite clearly. A real life example of why we have free will are that we have a well developed brain. This might seem none important, but it is what lets us have cognitive thoughts. We can predict what will happen if we make a certain choice and what will happen if we don’t. We can choose our own path through thoughtful decision making and do as we want because we can. Even in fictional things we make up such as the play Romeo and Juliet free will is a key factor. The entire play is flooded with bad decisions. These include but are not limited to: Marrying a person you just met, killing you new cousin, going to a place from which you are banished, drinking a strange drink that makes you appear dead, etc. These all could’ve been avoided. Some particular events toward the end of the play include Romeo and Juliet's deaths. Romeo could have chose to live a new life or at least not kill himself. He also could’ve concluded she’s not dead when he kissed her and she wasn’t cold nor decomposing. We made the idea that we are constantly going forward in time. Time is something we made to keep data. We as humans are pattern finders and time is our greatest pattern. The definition of fate is “be destined to happen, turn out, or act in a particular way.” How can anything be destined to happen if we came up with the idea of destiny?
