Examples Of Fred Collins A Mystery Of Heroism

When someone thinks of a “hero”, many different attributes may come to mind. For example, some might think of a parent or a mentor, someone they look up to. While others think of someone who risked their life for their country. Both of these are examples of true heros. Someone who is a true hero is selfless, sharp, caring, and ready for whatever may happen to them. In the story, “A Mystery of Heroism” by Stephen Crane, Fred Collins, the main character, decides to go straight into the battlefield so he can get a drink of water. Collins makes the choice not because he is desperate for a drink, but because his fellow soldiers think that he does not have the guts to do it. In order to prove himself to his comrades, Collins risks his life and walks …show more content…
One example of this was his decision to go get water for the other men, even though no one was in desperate need of it. Towards the beginning of the story, some of the other men were talking about how Collins’ trip was pointless and obviously not needed. One of the men even said that no one was “dying of thirst” (Crane 460). The soldiers were in the middle of fighting and no one was really worried about water at that moment. Seeing that no one needed water that critically, “His captain waved the bucket away,” and said “Give it to the men!” (Crane 462). The captain did not want the water, so he said to offer it to the men, who ended up not even fighting over it. Collins ended up not even drinking the water he risked his life to go get. Collins did not display any characteristic of heroism with his lack of …show more content…
Someone who is a true hero would not have done something that was uncalled for, and would have let their pride get hurt. One of the real reasons that Collins went across the battlefield was to get away from the other soldiers mocking him. The men did not think that Collins truly had the guts or the smarts to cross the battlefield in the middle of the battle to get water that no one needed, so they made fun of him. Before Collins left, his comrades made fun of him about his decision to go, wondering if he was really going to do it. Fred Collins, feeling a lot of peer pressure by his fellow soldiers, decided to make a bad decision and go out and cross the battlefield (Crane 460). In order to prove himself, Collins chose to go get the water. When his officer reluctantly let Collins go, he went to go get the water, he left his fellow soldiers stunned. Crane showed that Collins went to go get the water, he did it because of the men taunting him by saying “Collins was shaking his fists in the faces of some laughing comrades. ‘Dern yeh! I ain’t afraid t’ go. If yeh say much, I will go!’” (Crane 460). This shows how upset Collins was about the men making fun of him. A real hero would not let the taunting bother him, but Collins let them get to him and gave into the peer pressure. Collins is not a hero because of his lack of self discipline and putting his pride over his own

In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford shows bravery by standing up to the general. In the text Rainsford says “I’ll agree to nothing of the kind” when general zaroff offers him a deal so he doesn't get hunted by Zaroff. This shows bravery because he is standing up to someone that could kill him at any time and most likely get away with it, but he won't back down because he believes hunting humans is wrong. An example of Katniss showing bravery in the movie The Hunger Games is when she volunteers as tribute for her sister. In the movie it states “I volunteer as tribute”.…

Heroes do not walk away, they always help people in need which directly contrasts with Collins’ actions. Crain further proves that Collins is not a hero when he writes: “Suddenly there was an oath, the thud of wood on the ground, and a swift murmur of astonishment among the ranks. The two lieutenants glared at each other. The bucket lay on the ground empty.” (Crain n.pag.).…

In the beginning of “On the Rainy River”, O’Brien talks about how he used to think that everyone had courage that they had built up over the years and could access it whenever they needed to when emergencies came up: “I would simply tap a secret reservoir of courage that had been accumulating inside me over the years” (1000). He thought that everyone had courage and could be used whenever the time came that it was needed. O’Brien soon realizes that courage is actually not so easy to come by when he is faced with the opportunity to escape the draft, and he can not do it. He thought that courage would help him flee, and that would be courageous of him to escape. When he decides not to jump he finds out that courage is harder to get than he thinks, it was not just there for him when he needed it, he had to find it himself.…

For most soldiers their goal was not to be the uncommon hero, it was to just be a hero. “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather, they were too frightened to be cowards” (O’Brien 21). To be courageous was not good enough for majority of the soldiers, their goal was to not look like cowards and move on. They did not feel the need to force themselves into being abnormal heroes.…

Title George F. Kennan, an american diplomat and political scientist, once said, “Heroism is endurance for one moment more.” We often think that being a hero means someone who is fearless. This is not always true as we see in Homer’s The Odyssey. In and out of the fictional world bravery can take place and appear in many different forms. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird authored by Harper Lee and in the four articles, Things We Do For Love, The bravest thing you have ever done, The power of real girls, and finally Runaway slave on the Wisconsin-Canada line, the novel and articles alike all explain that a hero doesn’t have to be an almighty super hero, but an average mom or even a slave in earlier times. Though these articles aren’t directly connected with the story To Kill A Mockingbird all of these pieces show how bravery can come in an abundance of different forms such as, miniscule problems of everyday life, breaking out of social norm, sacrificing one's own health for another,…
