Forgiving Harmful People In society today people are ashamed to forgive others. People, who think forgiving means forgetting, are wrong. When you forgive someone you are telling them that you are no longer going to hold their actions against them. It does not mean you are going to completely forget all the things they did to you. Forgiving harmful people can be one of the hardest yet easiest things a person can do. According to the Merriam-Webster the definition of forgiveness is: “to stop feeling anger towards (someone who has done something wrong.)” There are several reasons why this could be hard and why it could be easy. In The Odyssey forgiveness appears when Odysseus, the main character, returns home from his thrilling journey. When Odysseus tried to tell Penelope, his wife, that it truly was him who had returned she did not believe him. Penelope had a final test and once she figured out it was really him she begged for his forgiveness. Odysseus forgave her and it was easy because he loved her. Although Odysseus may seem like a forgiving man, he also had a not so forgiving side. When the suitors and the unfaithful women of the house begged him for forgiveness, he did not budge. This example shows that sometimes forgiving others can be both easy and extremely hard. There are all sorts of stories throughout the Bible that go into detail about what forgiveness is, what it looks like, and why it is important. In the Christian religion, people believe that Jesus died on the cross to save them from their sins. God sent his son into the world so that he could save people from eternal suffering in hell. Jesus did not have to die on the cross but chose to anyways to show everyone that through him all are saved. Christians believe that God forgives their sin and that is why forgiveness is a constant theme throughout the entire Bible. This example portrays forgiveness as an easy thing because Jesus does not hesitate when it comes to forgiving people of their sins.
