Due to prejudice, the town of Verona in William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is torn apart. Romeo and Juliet, the children of counter houses, are prone to tragedy after they fall in love. The lovers of conflicting houses eventually accept that their love will never have either of their family’s blessings, the two seeing no other option than to be together in death. Shakespeare's use of foreshadowing helps convey the theme of prejudice in this tragedy. In the town of Verona are two houses; Montague and Capulet. Both houses each have a child that is fourteen years of age. Both children are raised on a value that insists that the other family is vile. However, Romeo spots Juliet, daughter of Capulet, and immediately falls in love with her. Likewise, Juliet then notices Romeo, also falling in love at first sight. The two then meet, sharing a kiss until both parties are called apart. Romeo soon learns that Juliet is a Capulet but does not let her heredity get in the way of their new-found love. Juliet, acknowledging the key concern which is that Romeo is from the Montague family, suggests that the two of them get married and rid of their given names. Juliet hopes that by ridding of their given last names that she and Romeo can be happily in love, without their family’s drama standing between said love. “Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” (2.2.34-36) Romeo and Juliet both know that in order to be together, they will have to be together in secret.
