The Prophecy states that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. Ironically though the king and queen end up fulfilling the prophecy by sending him away to die which never happens and instead advancing the prophecy. Although Oedipus never died he finally hears the prophecy and is mistaken, he believes he will kill his adoptive father but in actuality he ends up killing his biological father instead by accident.

The King & Queen's reaction to the prophecy wasn't surprising as they were stunned to hear that their son would end up killing his father. Oedipus's parents quickly jump into action and proceed to try and get rid of Oedipus in order to avoid the curse. Although this may have not been a proper response to such a prophecy although in their defence the King & queen were scared and this led them to think irrationally to the point of letting their son die. Another great example of the characters response is when the prophecy starts to make sense to Oedipus & he begins to slowly realize he unknowingly completed the prophecy

In an attempt to counter this prophecy, they get rid of Oedipus immediately after his birth, as told by Jocasta, “before three days were out after his birth King Laius pierced his ankles and by the hands of others cast him forth upon a pathless hillside,” (Sophocles 41). Ironically, Laius kills his son to falsify the terrible prophecies, while Anne Lively attempts to give her daughter life in order to create a future for her. This direct relation shows that in both extremes, life and death, alteration of fate is impossible. The first phrase of this quote, “before three days were out after his birth,” is similar to the phrase describing Anne’s losing Agatha. It highlights that even just waiting three short days is long enough to keep one’s destiny from changing - the only way the prophecies wouldn’t have come true is if Oedipus wasn’t born in the first place.…

Killing his father and marrying his mother are both examples of what the oracle predicted about them. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shows that, in the case of finding truth, if a man starts in search for the truth, he must find the whole truth, but if a man never starts in search for the truth, he can stay ignorant of the truth. The story of Oedipus shows that the better of the two is staying ignorant of the truth.…
