Examples Of Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find

Throughout the short story A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, there are slight inklings that hint towards the horrific demise of the family. These hints include various uses of foreshadowing and symbolism. However, there are three key aspects that leads readers to suspect not all is normal on this family road trip. The specific events that indicate the ending result of the story are the beginning conversation revolving around The Misfit, the siting of the old family burying ground, and the conversation with Red Sammy. In the beginning of the short story, the grandmother is trying to persuade Bailey and his family to go to east Tennessee rather than Florida. The most crucial point made by the grandmother was the The Misfit’s presence in Florida. Although the family does not take much to any interest in the grandmother’s bantering, she inquires what the little boy, John Wesley, would do if the Misfit caught him. The boy confidently replies that he would smack The Misfit in the face. Ironically, this is far from the truth, as John Wesley clutches onto his father’s hand as the father-son duo are led into the woods in the end (O’Connor 3). While the family …show more content…
Red Sammy begins to discuss with the family about two men who came in earlier with a old beat-up Chrysler. The Misfit and his gang are seen in a battered hearselike car later on, which could possibly be the car of the two men. This would explain why The Misfit was missing a shirt, had jeans on that were too tight for him, and how the crew found some friends to “borrow” clothes from. This is later proven as the The Misfit steals Bailey’s shirt from his body after he was shot. There is also mentioning of The Misfit again at The Tower, which Red Bailey states “a good man is hard to find.” This is a clear mentioning of the short story title and the ending conversation between The Misfit and the grandmother (O’Connor

The grandmother's actions during the conflict revealed the opposite. She pleaded to the Misfit that he was a good man with "common blood" who came from "nice people. " The old lady hoped that by appealing to his "good" and proper nature, her life would be spared. She then goes on to tell the man that he is unjustly called the "Misfit" because he is a good man with a genuine heart. O’Connor reveals the Grandmother’s fault by expressing that “a horrible thought came to her” . She had not wanted to travel to Florida but her reminiscence of her past life in Tennessee led her to give false directions which led them to their death. The theme is revealed when the Grandmother registered her mistake but chooses not to speak up due to her embarrassment. The use of this phrase foreshadows that due to her inaccuracy, something horrible might happen. In the story the grandmother is described as having her “eyes dilated and feet jumped up”, when she remembered the true location of the house.…

These expressions show how The Misfit was possibly once considered an unequivocally good person, and again reinstates O'Connor's theme of how the lines between good and evil are so easily blurred. For that in every good person, lie malicious tendencies. The foundation of good and evil is one that is recognizable across all humanity, though Flannery O'Connor easily shows her readers how that very basis not easily defined. With the two main characters of "A Good Man is Hard to Find," O'Connor uses efficient characterization to display her theme of how good and evil can be actively…

“She knew that Bailey would not be willing to lose any time looking at an old house, but the more she talked about it, the she wanted to see it once again and find out if the little twin arbors were still standing””(O’Connor 455). She is the one who insisted on turning back to see the old plantation. Once again it shows how self-centered and selfish she is. When they meet with Misfit, grandmother is the one who recognizes him. In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style, a work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the tone of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story. Her take on the characters is a complex mixture of agreement and disapproval.…
