Mildred as a Foil Character A foil character is a character who enriches the protagonists journey. The foil characters beliefs often differ from the protagonists (cite handout). The foil character that will be analyzed in this essay is Mildred Montag. Mildred is Guy Montag's wife who is very law abiding. She is a model citizen who complies with their social codes. She is an excellent example of a foil character because she shows Guy that life is worthless, people are in denial of anything bad, and that relationships do not matter. First, Mildred is a foil character in Fahrenheit 451 because she shows Guy that life is invaluable. Guy came home from work one evening to see Mildred lying cold and alone in her separate bed. He accidently kicked Mildred's empty pill bottle and realized that she had taken all her pills in an effort to kill herself. Guy immediately calls the paramedics, as soon as they are done with Mildred they leave abruptly due to an influx of similar calls. Guy starts to think about how people are so willing to kill themselves and that world has too …show more content…
When Mildred runs out of the house just as the firemen arrive and Guy says “Mildred, you didn't put in the alarm!” and all Mildred can say is “Poor family, poor family, oh everything gone, everything, everything gone now” (Bradbury 114). Guy now sees that Mildred did not really care about him like he cared about her. Guy sees that not only is the entire world a fraud but all of the people and relationships that are in it are too. Guy is enlightened to the fact that Mildred is a very shallow person and that she only cares about possessions and nothing really meaningful. Mildred does not even care about Guy and he is hurt by that. Here Guy realizes his marriage was a lie, he now knows that Mildred did not care about him and that she was just using him for the endurance of their
