First Impression
People say that you should never judge a book by its cover, it means you should never judge something just by the first appearance. In the real life, the ‘cover’ of people, what they wear, how they look, and their behaviour can often misrepresent what they are. Like the cover of a book, first impressions are not always right, it can be misleading, and not as true as what it really is. If people thought that first impressions are always right, they would have missed out on many things that may put a long-lasting impression on their life. It’s not until after you get to know someone that you really find out that what you see is not always what you get. Therefore, first impressions …show more content…
The opponents believe that people are most likely to be themselves on the first meet; however, when trying to make a good first impression, people can unintentionally be misleading. For example, people present themselves different depends on the situation, and who they are meeting. The first impression they give is not always deceiving, it just reflects the small piece that they are revealing about themselves. First impression can be deceiving because people usually deviate in different environments around different people, although what people are going through at the moment can make everyone first impressions different. The way someone thinks about the others is influenced by how that person present themselves when they meet for the first time, then people will form their first impression based on these snap judgment, which is usually wrong. If people formed a bad first impression, it is extremely hard to completely erase that impression. It is rather like putting your hand on the wet cement, after the cement is dry, you will not be able to change the shape of it anymore. In Blink, Gladwell gives an example of a law professor named Ian Ayres, he gathered a group of people with different races and genders, and tried to make them have the same background. They were told to walk to different dealership and ask about the price of the lowest car. It turned out a person in color or a woman will receive a higher price (93-94). In that example, the salesmen were sticking with the judgment about people’s gender and skin color, they ignore the background information and just focus on they way they present themselves. Therefore, the first impression people have about the someone’s appearance could cloud every other piece of information they gather in that first
