“Fear is only as deep as the mind allows it.” These words of wisdom were written as a Japanese Proverb. This quote is trying to explain that the fears someone has can only be as scary as that someone allows them to be. If people allow fear to enter their thoughts, it can make them make choices that they would not do if fear was not inside them. This theory is exemplified in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In this novel, Abigail Williams blames many people for witchcraft in an attempt to claim John Proctor for herself. Because Abigail starts blaming people, others fear they will be called upon for witchcraft, and therefore they start blaming others for their own safety. To begin with, the acts and decisions made from fear in The Crucible relate to the choices made from fear in Fear of the Government Makes Americans More likely to Reach for a Gun because Americans are making their decisions out of fear, instead of making what is probably the the right and better decision. In the article Americans are making their decisions solely on the fear of others, as it says, “Just under a quarter of respondents, or 22.6%, said they had voted for a particular candidate out of fear” (Kordova). This means that 22.6 percent of the people that vote in the United States are only voting for people because they are scared of what the other candidates will do. These people are letting fear get inside of them which is dangerous because they are making decisions to prevent something bad from happening instead of making a potentially better choice to have good things happen. In the text the author Nicholas D. Kristof explains how people in rural Tanzania sacrifice elderly woman for being witches when there is little rainfall. The author say, “He believes that if climate change causes more drought years in Tanzania, the result will be more elderly women executed” (Kristof). Fear is building up inside of these people that they will not receive any rainfall. Since there is so much fear they try and blame these elderly women as an excuse. They are scared that if they do not kill these elderly women there will be longer rain droughts. Another example of how fear is taking over their decision making in Tanzania is when Kristoff talks about how greenhouse gases are making poor countries have civil war, and an increase in killing witches with machetes. This is heartbreaking because powerful countries like America are spreading gases in our atmosphere which affects the weather in these poor countries.
