Is To Kill A Mockingbird a timeless classic? Timeless novels are made when the themes and topics in the novel can be related to by many different kinds of people over a long period of time. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee can be considered a timeless classic because it follows the story of a family. The topic of family, and the four principle characters in that family, and the relationships between them that anyone can relate to make the story a timeless classic. One of the topics in To Kill A Mockingbird that makes it timeless is family which is explored through Atticus, Calpurnia, and the children in the Finch family. To begin, one of the aspects of family that makes the novel timeless is the father figure of Atticus, that anyone …show more content…
When Jem and Scout go out to build a snowman during the winter Jem steals Miss Maudie's hat to use for the snowman. This shows the community that Atticus is not fit to be a father; as he cannot even control his own children. As Miss Maudie says to him “Atticus, you’ll never raise ‘em!” (Lee 91). Miss Maudie says out loud what most of the community believes then, that a single father is not capable of properly raising children. This is the criticism that Atticus faces every day that makes it even more difficult for him to raise his children. Next, Atticus, like many parents strives to be a good example for his children. When talking to Jack Finch about the court case he says that he can not face his children if he does not try his hardest and that “I hope and pray that I …show more content…
For example, they take each other for granted and rely on each other because they know that the other one will always be there. Jem even uses having to take care of Scout as an excuse to get out of doing dares “Jem had his little sister to think of the time I dared him to jump off the top of the house” he says “If I got killed what’d become of you?” (17). Jem and Scout rely on each other and help each other with everything, they know that the other one will always be there and use it to their advantage. Another way that Jem and Scouts relationship is timeless is the way that they annoy each other at times like all siblings do. Jem especially starts to get on Scouts nerves when he turns twelve she believes he is “difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody. His appetite [is] appalling, and he [tells] me so many times to stop pestering him” (153). Scout begins to get annoyed at Jem, because he becomes annoyed with her, which is how many sibling relationships work. Lastly, they love each other, even if they do not say it and only show it through their actions. When Ms. Dubose starts insulting Scout Jem says quietly “My sister ain’t dirty and I ain’t scared of you” (141). He does this many times in the novel and so does Scout, though they may not say that they love each other, they show it through their

Like wise Kohlberg once said “The child can internalize the moral values of his parents and culture and make them his own only as he comes to relate these values to a comprehended social order and to his own goals as a social self”. Kohlberg demonstrates that the apple never falls far from the tree, that a child does not only inherit genetic characteristics, but also absorbs behaviors from their parents. Harper Lee shows that when children are raised in a household with a parent already very high on the Kohlberg 's Stages of Moral Development, than that child is likely to develop a moral compass at an earlier age. The characters in To Kill a Mockingbird embody what really happens in our society. Studies say that when a parent is more intelligent than most then their child will have a better chance of being smart.…
