Examples Of Fallacies

Last week some interesting conversation about the declaration of independence arose and the continuation of fallacies caused several more examples in politics to cross my mind. The way Donald Trump makes use of fallacies was brought up, but another viewpoint could be is a presidential campaign is full of fallacies. Arguments to support their candidacy with false reasoning is done commonly. For example, a potential candidate may argue that one one thing may be the reason for something horrid occurring in america. He/she will go on to say if we do this then this will happen. Both of these are fallacies, and I have seen them in presidential debates without questioning those arguments. I took an extended look at the declaration of independence,

Numerous noteworthy speeches use logical fallacies as well as logos, ethos, pathos in order for an effective communication of the issue. For example, Obama’s Inaugural Address, incorporates an unforgettable slogan that reiterates throughout the entirety of the speech to make for a more powerful and effective address. During Obama's Inaugural Address, he reused the expression “We will” at the start of various sentences. He supposed, “We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.” This logical fallacy, glittering generalities, reminds people that Obama will bring our nation together.…

While Zaleski brings up some compelling points, she commits several logical fallacies that weaken her argument. For example, she argues that “mothers are the people you need on your team” because mothers have a good work ethic and high motivation due to their already busy schedules. Zaleski commits hasty generalization here because she concludes that all mothers can balance the demands of raising a family, having a career, and taking care of themselves at the same time. She fails to consider that not all women can handle such a full schedule, making this assertion illogical. Furthermore, she neglects to back up this statement with scholarly evidence, making it opinionated rather than factual.…

Many superstitions are examples of post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacies. During the times of the Salem witch trials, the ignorance of the people prevented them from thinking rationally and they quickly adapted to blaming their misfortunes on other unrelated objects and people. After Dr. Hale arrives to examine Betty, Giles asks him if he should worry about his wife because she reads books: “ Last night -mark this- I tried and tried and could not say my prayers. And then she closed her book and walks out of the house, and suddenly -mark…

Political Party Argument Much like today, people have struggled over what parties to join; Democratic or Republican, but in 1792 The Democratic-Republican and The Federalist where the two main parties. Each having its respective owner's, Alexander Hamilton runs The Federalists, and Thomas Jefferson runs the Democratic-Republicans. So, for presidency by any means the better choice would be The Federalist Party, because of their great ties with other foreign countries, also there view on how the government should be run, and to prove all of this, what they have done to advance the nation as a whole. The Federalists wanted a loose interpretation, but as some may argue that having a loose interpretation of the constitution would lead into some possessing people too much power.…

Once every four years, many of the standard television advertisements are replaced with something much worse: political campaign ads. There are many different types of campaign ads. Among them are characters ads, which serve to establish the good character of a candidate, bandwagon ads, which serve to convince the public that a candidate is best choice because many other people are voting for them, and evidence ads, that use facts to convince the public that a candidate is the best choice for office. There is, however, one type of ad that sparks more controversy than any of the others, the attack ad. The attack ad seeks to dissuade voters from choosing a certain candidate by attacking their character or track record.…

To begin, I can honestly say I was unsure what the definition of fallacy even was. Moreover, I never realized there were so many different types of fallacies. That being said, I feel as though some types of fallacies definitely pertain to current events and more specifically, events happening in the United States. In the case of the election of the President of the United States, the situation, in my eyes, always seems to turn out the same. Individuals do not comprehend that there are, in fact, more than two candidates in which they can select from.…

A great example would be one of Taylor Swift’s songs such as “Blank Space”. She states that “boys only want love if it’s torture.” So, Taylor bases her previous relationships with men that they only want love if it’s torture. Since, this is her strictly opinion on what she thinks men want when it comes to love, it cannot be proven factual, therefore causing it to be an informal fallacy.…
