Expectancy Violations Theory Application:
I have worked at Weis Markets in Frostburg, Maryland for almost two years. I am a cashier and spend most of my time throughout the day around customers. There have been many times where customers did not follow social norms. One of my main pet peeves is whenever I’m in the middle of bagging and someone will reach over the counter. Sometimes customers try to take the bag before I am done packing it. This always makes me uncomfortable and I jolt back so the customer won’t touch me. I am not against being close to people, but this always makes me uncomfortable. I do not like when people I have never met before invade my personal space. Whenever I see these customers again I always try to bag there groceries

There is just something eerie to me about someone reaching their hand towards me to grab something. I feel like this is a good example of Expectancy Violation Theory, because this always makes me tense. This theory believes that we all have personal bubbles and our intimate space is zero to 18 inches. I get very anxious when customers invade my intimate space. Whenever these customers invade my intimate space it makes me uneasy, this is because it is a violation to my personal space. The meaning of some violations is easy to spot. As a case in point, no one would agonize over how to interpret a purposeful poke in the eye with a sharp stick (Griffin, 2016, p. 87). I feel as though when the same few customers repeat this action they are aware of the way it makes me feel. I believe they repeatedly do this to make me hurry. To me this action is simply

I have been working in a nursing home for a little over a year as a dietary aide and have witnessed many problems within the dietary department. The root cause to all of the problems in the dietary department is bad management from my former manager, Sara. Sara was the dietary manager whose job was to manage the kitchen staff, order food and supplies, and plan out meals and snacks for special events at the nursing home. Bad management existed in the kitchen because Sara gave overtime to her employees like it was candy. The kitchen was understaffed for the past couple of months and so the only way that Sara resolved this issue was to give out overtime.…

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

I even started to say simple things through morse code with the clicking such as S.O.S. or N.O. and Y.E.S. I found it funny that someone picked up on my morse code when I finally stopped. Through my excessive pen clicking I received many dirty and slightly annoyed looks, a few pity laughs and a “bless your heart.” I originally felt that Mr. Hurt was using me as an example more often in hope that I would stop the pen clicking, but I later found out he had no idea that I was the one doing the clicking. With any act of deviance there is always at least one person who finds it hilarious and one who wants to strangle you until the deviance is stopped. This act was no different, I had someone chuckling at other people's reactions, and someone who kept on turning around and giving me the dirtiest look he could conjure.…

We chose the mall since it is a typical place for someone to go, and a place where retail workers are used to interacting with people and getting questions asked like, “where can I find X?” and “how much is Y?” The first place I started out at was Dillards, where I asked a retail worker where the dresses were.…

Most of the time, when we hear the word “gym”, we associate that word with exercising, getting in shape, lifting weights, losing weight, or staying healthy. The majority of the people who goes to the gym usually wear clothes specifically for the gym that are more comfortable and allow them to do movements which with regular casual clothes would be more difficult to do. We also assume that the people that go to the gym frequently follow a healthy diet to get in shape, stay in shape, or lose weight.…

An untestable theory is one that cannot be proven true or false. For one reason or another the theory is beyond man’s current ability to investigate, and thus, it is disregarded until further developments in knowledge or technology make testing possible. To provide an example of such a theory, many people adamantly believe that ghosts exist. However, at this point in time, testing for supernatural entities is impossible, so such theories provide no purpose other than to relay one’s personal ideas about a phenomenon. With that in mind though, if researching a previously untestable theory eventually does become possible, then considering it would be worthwhile.…
