Examples Of Evil In The Crucible

The innocent girl stands there, feet just barely supported by a wooden block that is soon to be pulled away and a scratchy rope wrapped around her neck when she hears the sentence that will bring imminent death, “ Hang her.” This play, written by Arthur Miller, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Hypocrisy, adultery, and jealousy can all be uncovered in evil and it leads to self-destruction and the destruction of others. Numerous examples of evil are revealed in this play, but not always in obvious ways. Hypocrisy can be discovered in most of the characters in this play. Take the judges for example, they condemn others of crimes they have not committed, when they are the ones with evil intentions. Many of the accusers are just looking for payback to people they hold grudges against. Some accusers just want other people’s land and are willing to do anything to get that land. Judge Danforth condemns innocent people of witchcraft just because Abigail and her friends say they have seen certain people with the devil. Judge Danforth says, “Mr. Hale, you surely do not doubt my justice.”(Miller 92) This reveals many things about Danforth’s character. Numerous examples that are hard to ignore are found in this play. It also shows the severe consequences of actions in this play. Evil comes in many forms. In this play it is hypocrisy, adultery, and jealousy though there are many others. Evil is discovered in the hypocrisy of the judges and in the accusers who condemn innocent people of witchcraft. Adultery, which Proctor in committed, leads to more sin. Jealousy, found evidently in Abigail, is not only the acceptance of evil but also acting on that evil which can harm the people around you. The word evil normally is connected to terrible, evident sins, but the truth is most times it is hidden in sins that may not appear as sins at
