Gatsby was a great man that was held great power but, he did not let his wealth get to his head…Well, not all the time. Mr. Gatsby was a mysterious man that lived in his own type of fantasy. He lived on the love that had continued to keep him going from my friend Mrs. Daisy Buchanan. He thought that they could continue their love right where it left off when he went off to war. But, he was sadly mistaken his hope for having Daisy still will not go out like the green light at the end of her dock flashing in the night. Mr. Gatsby did everything for the Daisy the parties that he paid for even his house was all for Daisy…. He was willing to give up so much for a love that was uncertain but he had hope. Now, it is sad to see that those affected by the kind doings of Gatsby, even those that were slightly curious as to who Gatsby was did not show up to pay him his proper respects. He deserved to have more than just Nick and myself here. The rumors that were told about him were most time false but, he never corrected anyone on them. Mr. Gatsby had a bright heart and mind that deserved to have much more that he left this world with. Even though I have not known Gatsby for long, I feel as though he still deserved to be sent away with the utmost respect. Thank you for your time and Rest in Peace Gatsby.

Although it is debatable whether F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, is truly one of the greatest novels of American literature, one thing remains certain: the classic novel is infused with a multitude of sententious statements that touch the hearts and minds of readers even to this day. Among the countless meaningful quotes the novel has to offer, there is one in particular that continues to echo not only in the mind but throughout time. This statement is none other than the closing line of the novel, as narrator Nick Carraway reflects to himself that “...It [the orgastic future that lays before us] eludes us then, but that’s no matter... So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (ch.9,…

A dream deferred can be described as having a specific goal in mind, but that goal somehow ends up delayed. In both “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the idea of deferred dreams is clearly portrayed through the characters of Walter Younger and Jay Gatsby. Walter Younger and Jay Gatsby are two completely different characters, but they are similar in wanting to achieve their dreams. Walter dreams of owning a liquor store but that has not been able to happen because of his poverty and the prejudice in his society. Gatsby dreams that the lies he surrounds himself with will become real resulting in Daisy loving him again, but reality catching up to him is what stands in his way.…

The Great Gatsby, of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work of the same name, is an interesting character, in having effectively invented himself. In Chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby, we learn of the figurative birth of Jay Gatsby, as the brainchild of James Gatz, introduced with: “Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself” (Fitzgerald, 98). Gatsby as a “Platonic conception” gives a good deal of insight into the character of Gatsby — him seeming to be a very popular and successful man from a questionable background is revealed to have come into effect from being a calculated, perfected idea. Man, as German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche proposed, is something to be surpassed. Gatz had determined the concept for whom he would be, and this…

In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, the author F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates Jay Gatsby’s perpetual optimism through his struggle to balance his ideals with the reality of the world around him. This optimism presents itself in three aspects crucial to the development of his character in the novel, Gatsby’s delusion, his burgeoning ammorality, and his irrational love for Daisy. Firstly, Jay Gatsby’s continuous attempts to balance his ideology with his actuality cause him to become deluded. During the beginning of the novel before the Nick has actually met him, he’s told many wild and extraordinary rumors about Gatsby, such as the one he hears from Myrtle Wilson’s sister Charlotte.…

Since Daisy and Gatsby still have not had an encounter at his parties he was waiting for, he tried and tried again. Gatsby’s perseverance showed that he was not in love with the idea of her, but that he was in love with her. “He hadn 't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (91). Gatsby lived for the purpose of Daisy’s approval. While everyone around him was so caught up with their reputation in society, Gatsby was caught up with his reputation to Daisy.…
