The ferry scene in the movie, The Dark Knight, also presented another ethical problem: the Prisoner Dilemma (Mlawski 1). To sum it all up, two boats are in the water and each boat has until midnight to detonate the other ships ordinance or both ferries will be destroyed. There are civilians in one boat and prisoners in the other boat. Each boat has to make a choice – kill or be killed – confess or stay quiet. Not to mention that the clock is ticking. Of course, neither the civilian boat nor the prisoner boat is able to carry though the deed, and both detonators are left un-activated. Though according to the Prisoner Dilemma, each boat must pay. In the movie, The Dark Knight, Batman and Joker know that without a leader in Gotham City, the city will fall. Batman stands as the protector and hero of Gotham city, making sure everyone follows the rules and ensures that those who don’t will pay in prison. At first, Batman wanted to step down from this position as a protector but he decided not to. Batman knew that if the people in Gotham City were without a leader, the city would turn into chaos (Wolff 16). Batman’s archenemy, the Joker, wants nothing more than to see Gotham City burn and turn into chaos. In The Dark Knight, the Joker says, “Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos.” Both Batman and the Joker know that in order for the city to turn into chaos its leader must be destroyed. This is the reason why the Joker made it a priority to get rid of Batman. With Batman no longer around, there would be no one to protect the city, which would lead to …show more content…
The Joker was the most self-aware villain of the Dark Knight trilogy. He was malicious to both villains and heroes and was also trying to make a philosophical statement about human nature. He wanted the people of Gotham to understand that deep down everyone is as evil and cruel as he is. He did things without remorse, without regret. He killed innocent people for no reason. The Joker enjoys creating chaos and introducing anarchy into different places. He seems almost devil like. “There are some people that just wants to see the world burn Mr. Wayne” –
