Our lives would be controlled and our lives greatest desires could never be fulfilled because of their mental and physical restraints. We were meant to grow and prosper as free children and in a society where were equal and everything is control, that would mean nothing. It would not even exist, or be an option. There would be no option. This is not what America is founded on, not

Reconstruction ended well after 1877 marking the first of a pair of attempts at social equality in the US. It is bookended by the only good war that the US has been involved in that allowed the US to explode on to the world stage as a super power that is only now in its later years of dominance. In the nearly sixty-five years between the years of 1877 and 1945 the United States underwent dynamic changes in many respects. Its social framework for many of its citizens and immigrants changed radically, both in the roles that they functioned with in society but also in the changes to their political incorporation and disenfranchisement. What if society finally decided to make everyone equal, and not just with people’s right? What if the government forced the extraordinary and above average to become more normal so nobody fights and gets jealous? In the book “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry, and the short story “Harrison Bergeron”, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., life is exactly like that. Jonas, from “The Giver”, lives in a society run by an over controlling government that has does not allow its citizens to make their own choices. A Lot of people turn a blind eye to things not connecting them to racism, even when it's obvious. The moment you visually see a black male lying on the ground with his hands up and still getting shot by a police officer, then when asking “why’d you shot me?” and the response is “ I don’t know…”, and people still create excuses for the cop to be let free is disgusting. Turning on your television and seeing groups of college kids protest because they feel their white voices are being oppressed, and Chanting “White power” with others throwing racial slurs and wearing “KKK” attire, while carrying a Nazi flag is saddening. Then watch African American still having to explain why you don’t stand and pledge to the flag, being told “you're disrespecting to all soldiers who fought for you” being yelled at, spat on and called cruel names, being told it is your right not to stand but be still being shamed by it.…

Achieving Equality in America There has long been a debate on whether or not America has the ability to achieve true equality for everyone. This does pertain mostly to race or ethnicity, but also applies to gender and social class. Many will agree that we have come a long way from the point of owning people as slaves as far as equality goes, but will not admit to America’s true fault of ongoing racism. There are people who are bluntly racist, but there are not as many of those people around in modern times.…

George Will states how the election of 2004 “may be the most nation-shaping election since 1932” (Line 1-2) which was mainly due to differences in the parties’ foreign policy beliefs. This can lead the readers to believe that George Will will discuss the Republicans and Democrats contrasting beliefs on multilateralism, nation-building, preemptive war, and sovereignty. Those beliefs are vital to our country, some of most important building blocks to our government. Without having a balance in those categories, our country could be unharmonized, which could potentially cause tensions between the government and the citizens. The reciprocity of freedom and equality can be easily envisioned when involving it in highschool regulations as a base, and then connecting it to our government.…
