I’ve been drawn to epidemiology since my health science seminar class at the University of Arkansas at Little rock (UALR). This class discussed how communities are affected by health disparities and how health educators can help influence change within those communities. Health disparities and the community view about health, as well as having access to health care caught my attention even more. Then I started to brainstorm how to implement a plan for the community, to can help prevent the occurrence of health related illnesses and put a hold on the illnesses within the community. Through extensive research that’s when I discovered epidemiology and I’m so enthralled! I would enjoy studying trends of illness and diseases that affect certain communities, but what I’m really enthralled upon is how illness and diseases began. At the University of West Florida (UWF) I can achieve my goal of becoming an epidemiologist and help inform each population of preventative measures one illness at a time.

Since an early age, I have always wanted to be involved with health sciences, and I have work as hard as I can to accomplish this dream. I was born into a Hispanic family, and raised in way that puts values ahead of money or economic status. I did not enjoy the luxuries that many of my friends had, but I was taught very strong principles. My father always taught me to work hard no matter what, weather it was for a job, school or a hobby. He always told me that I will encounter many rocks in my path, but that it would be up to me to stay behind that rock and let the rock defeat me, or I could just find a way to continue on my path until the next rock.…

Moreover, as a minority myself, I have personal ties to the negative outcomes of this particular public health issue. I frequently view how avoidable diseases and unhealthy life habits continue to evolve in my family and the entire African-American community. Social epidemiology is defined as, “Understanding the causes and distribution of diseases and impairments within a population.” (Weiss & Lonnquist, 2015 p. 35) Nurses and doctors are sort of like epidemiologists because they investigate or assess the patient to find out what is wrong. Health care providers study disease and illness patterns just like epidemiologists do (Weiss & Lonnquist, 2015 p. 36). When a patient comes to the ER, nurses assess the patient by listening to their heart and lungs, checking their skin, and drawing blood to check for labs. Nurses throughly check all of the patient’s body systems to find what is wrong.…
