In contrast, Gatsby became rich by bootlegging, and he did not mature properly, as he does not know how to let go and give up on some dreams. The real question here, however, is not if Gatsby becomes worse or better by pursuing his empty dream; it is if there is a reason for pursuing an empty dream. Gatsby’s reason for pursuing an empty dream was because he loved Daisy, but as a result, Gatsby threw away everything after realising he cannot attain his dream. This can apply to many families that immigrate to America in order to achieve the American Dream, which has lately, become an empty dream as Trump has become the President of the United States, who will most likely force immigrants to "go back to where they came from".
