In the book-to-movie adaption by Alice Walker, The Color Purple shows us many dynamic characters throughout her story. Dynamic characters are people who show an inner change by events that take place. Throughout the story, characters like Celie, Albert, and Sofia have to face very impactful situations that change who they are as people. Some characters’ have a positive impact from their hardships while others attract a more secluded result.
Sofia’s character is very strong and independent. She has two children and is very protective over them and herself. In the story, a white man was saying very vulgar things toward Sofia, so as a result, she punched him. Men began to surround her and a cop appeared in front of her and knocked her out. Sofia was placed in a prison for her “assault.” She was continuously given unnecessary punishments and harsh beatings. After Sofia was released, she became an entirely different person. Albert is a grown african-american man. After the death of his first wife, he was looking for another spouse. He originally wanted to marry Nettie-the main character's younger sister-but her father would not allow it. He gave him permission to marry the oldest daughter instead as a compromise. He agreed but wasn’t satisfied by her appearance or her lack of purity. Albert was a very abusive, aggressive, and drunk husband. He was not independent in any way, shape, or form. Later on in the story, Celie became friends with Albert’s other love, Shug. Celie and Shug became best friends. Shug helped Celie escape her tragic, and miserable life. As a result of their absence, Albert began to fall apart. During his downfall Albert began to realize how poorly he treated Celie throughout their marriage. He learned how to truly appreciate Celie, and to think of others rather than
