Dreams of Change and Growth
Rudolfo Anaya’s classical Chicano novel, Bless Me Ultima, describes a six-year-old boy
named Antonio setting out on a journey to manhood while also undergoing a search of his
identity. The story takes place in the llano of New Mexico with a family of six including Ultima.
Antonio, the main character, is placed in godforsaken situations that challenge his beliefs, sense
of direction for the future, and feeds into his fears. Throughout the novel, Ultima guides
Antonio away from the confusion and into a peaceful resolution during or after internal ordeals

Through these set of dreams, we can conclude that Antonio is a man of learning other than the
rest of the kinds of people Antonio could be rather it is a farmer, priest, vaquero, or curandera.
Because he learns from his experiences and reflections via his dreams. We can also conclude
that the deaths he witnessed in the real world and the dream world familiarized him with the
concept of death, that prepared him for Ultima’s death.
Antonio’s dreams act as a place of self-reflection that provides guidance and foreshadow
in Antonio’s childhood. It is his dreams that familiarize him with death, to forgive all that is good
and evil, to find his truth than looking for other people’s truths. His dreams prepare him through
the transition from being a child to a man or the “change” (page 245). Rudolfo Anaya sets the
