“The Cask of Amontillado” Essay “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allen Poe, is a short horror story written in a first person point of view on the character Montresor’s perspective. Poe is constantly using irony in the story, and primarily uses verbal irony and dramatic irony. In the story on page 3, Montresor and Fortunato are having a toast. Fortunato says “ I drink, to the buried that repose around us.” while Montresor says “And I to your long life.” In this line, the readers know something Fortunato doesn’t. While Montresor drinks to “Fortunato’s long life”, the readers know that Montresor is plotting to kill Fortunato, and in reality the reader knows that he will not have a long life whatsoever.
