Is domestic violence caused by the patriarchal values of our culture or is caused by individual, socioeconomic or psychological factors?

In today’s world, people believe that there is more equality in gender. In Modern Industrial Society there have been increasing career opportunities for women in the society, men have been acknowledged in their interest field, such as cooking.
In the feudal era, men were the dominant gender in the society. Women were restrained to the four walls of the household. The society expected women to look after the domestic chores and the welfare of the children whereas men were the ones who had to earn for their families.

The statistics that were shared in the discussion organized by National Women Commission in Janakpurdham showed that the causes of violence were social norms, child marriage and vices including the dowry system were the factors contributing towards violence against women. Dhanusa Chief District Officer Dilip Kumar stated that forms of violence against women are becoming more malicious and atrocious due to ill social practices. The traditional social norms and values have legitimized violence and prejudice in household and community. This has occurred due to the inadequacy of laws. The UN WOMEN have suggested that they would transform the social norms and attitudes and facilitate women to overcome the economic barriers to effectual participation in the market and guarantee their full involvement, voice, and society in all spheres of local and national life. UN WOMEN is taking the lead in the voice advocating gender equality and women’s empowerment globally.
