Gaming’s Diversity Problem Video games are a prime example of international, modern day media. Gaming has become a major source of entertainment for the world, many people come into contact with video games whether they recognize it or not. Whether it’s outreach extends to books or to big budget movies, video games have cemented their place in the entertainment world as an interactive form of storytelling. Video games have come a long way from simple Mario side scrollers and PacMan arcade games. Modern day mainstream gaming strives to have an immersive experience with impressive graphics and gameplay. The platform has made advancements in quality, so why are video games so lacking in diversity? The state of diversity in gaming is due …show more content…
There are plenty of other races scattered throughout games, so it is not like there are none to be found. The issue here lies in the roles that many minorities play in video games. Representation in gaming is there, but it’s not a good kind of representation. The roles that minorities are made to play feeds into stereotypes that other forms of media have already established.
Many mainstream action games take place in urban environments, a prime example of this would be a game such as Watch Dogs. Another urban based game is Grand Theft Auto, which showcases black characters as playable characters, which would be well off if it weren’t for the crime focus of the game. Now, this is not to say that games like Grand Theft Auto can’t have minorities in it, to say that would be unfair. The issue is that the minority characters in games like these don’t have other games to counteract the stereotypes being perpetuated about

Dmitri Williams, a professor at University of Southern California, did a sample study on 150 games over a variety of genres, ratings, and platforms. During William’s study he found “fewer than 3 percent of video game characters were recognizably Hispanic and none were playable. Native Americans and biracial characters were non-existent. African Americans enjoyed a rate of 10.74 percent, with a big caveat; they were mostly athletes and gangsters”(Pack). The diversity of race in gaming is problematic. Currently, there are some races that haven’t even gotten so much as a nod from the gaming world such as people of Indian, Biracial, or Native American descent. If a white male protagonist's story allows, the lesser represented races might be shown as targets to shoot at while the player character visits their country for the plot of their adventure. Resident Evil 5 is known well for it’s controversy over showcasing africans as bloodthirsty zombies as they were being blown away by the white male protagonist. In response to the backlash, Capcom altered the racial dynamics of the enemies and introduced a mixed raced woman named Sheeva as a sidekick. This wouldn’t have been done at all were it not for the

of the race being depicted is a negative one; that child will carry that perspective their whole life. This can lead to a inner hate of one's self, interpersonal conflict, or other emotions such as feeling inferior to others, lack of emotional development, feeling empty because they haven’t been able to truly get to know themselves, us versus them mentality and the feeling that they have two personalities. In the book Flipping the Script: White Privilege and Community Building by Donna K. Bivens, she describes this inner conflict as “Internalized racism affects the inner lives of people of color. Because race is a social and political construct grounded in a history/experience of oppressor-oppressed relationships based on physical characteristics,…

Most animated characters that are directed toward children tend to be very simple in design, they often offer colorful images that will easily grab the attention of the young adolescents that are watching the program. Cartoons are very influential to children because often characters are not identifiable as any race so it is easy for multiple kids to relate to them. However, some cartoon characters do have a race and it is sad to say that the entirety of their character is described by the race or ethnicity that they are representing. Due to the limited amount of cartoon characters with identifiable race, the characters that do have race are heavily influential to the children who are watching the program, and can easily influence the views…

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

It may not be surprising to foreign viewers seeing white actors playing their role, but to minorities in America, they take it as an insult. Hiring foreign actors may be expensive and can cause disinterest in people as they prefer seeing well-known actors. But it does not hurt to risk a couple bucks for a bigger cause. The process of solving this problem is easy enough. To avoid whitewashing, moviemakers should do what is right and put the right actor in the right role.…

The media should be more representative of people of color, other than African American. Asians and Latinos make up about 23% of all America. The Effects of Racial Bias on Sports as Entertainment Sports in the last hundred years or so-have become significantly more diverse in terms of the ethnic and racial backgrounds of their participants. Years ago, the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. were predominantly, and at a certain point, exclusively, white leagues. White players, white coaches, white owners and even white cheerleaders. And while the sports world, like the real world, doesn’t have to deal with much blatant racism--like not allowing a person to participate in a sport based off skin color--there is still plenty of subtle racial discrimination. This subtle discrimination however, is far from inconsequential because it ultimately leads to a lesser product on the court, field, etc.…

Hollywood: Truly a Land of Opportunity? From white actors portraying black men in classics, such as Othello, or even from white actress playing dark skinned women, such as Mariane Pearl, white actors portraying people of color in american films has been a tradition in Hollywood. Hollywood has historically made the decision to cast white actors instead of letting minorities play their own roles. While Hollywood is known for being a white industry, over the past years more noise, such as the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite (8), has been made about the lack of diversity in their films.…

Until recently races were believed to have biological differences, however now people know that is no longer true. Unfortunately, people still judge others of different color by stereotyping them, which then leads to prejudice or racism. Racism starts out in every person 's’ head and depending on how they act on it can form a socioeconomic gap between races. Thus not allowing the same access to sports equipment or fields and causing certain sports to be dominated by a certain race since they do not have equal opportunities to well paid jobs.…
