Disobedience has and always will be necessary for changes throughout society. It is a valuable human trait that promotes social progress and many examples can be found throughout history that made a huge impact or change in the way the world is today. Important social changes can only be made through acts of disobedience to promote progress. A well known, famous, and historical example of disobedience comes from Mohandas Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement in the once British-ruled India. Ghandi’s defiance of British laws over the empires salt monopoly sparked a wave of civil disobedience that contributed to expelling the British empire.The British empire set tax laws on the production of Indian salt which lead to the country having to import British salt. This occurred before the american revolution and was lead by a political protest group known as The Sons of Liberty. The members of the group took control of a tea shipment coming from the East India Company and the members dumped all of the tea into the harbor in protest to the tea act that the British had imposed on the colonies. The British had already imposed many other different kinds of taxes on other goods and the protesters felt that the British had no right and no representation to do so since the colonies and the British government were both separated by the Atlantic Ocean This event eventually inspired others to also commit an act of disobedience and escalated on both sides to the break out of the American Revolution. Disobedience is necessary for social progress, improvements, removal of the unjust, and as a whole is something that is needed to promote change.
