Examples Of Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird

In my opinion, the story To Kill A Mockingbird is more racism than love. However, the time that this story was taken place was in the year of 1932. Which was when colored and Caucasian people were segregated. Although slavery wasn't still perpetuating, there was still signs of racism. Robinson was treated unfairly because of his race. For this reason, he was persecuted and accused for something he didn't do. One Sunday, Calpurnia, who is the Finch’s black cook decided to take Jem and Scout to a colored church. Everyone welcomed them instead of one woman named Lula. She criticized Calpurnia for bringing them. During service, their pastor collected money for a woman named Helen. Scout then found out that her husband, Tom Robinson, was falsely …show more content…
He was convicted because of his color. The trial was perpetual until Tom pleaded guilty, and was sent to Enfield Prison Farm. Because Tom knew that he was innocent he tried to escape the prison. However, as Tom attempted to escape, he was shot seventeen times in his back. Personally, I feel like he was treated like an animal instead of a person. Although Tom's death was typical to the people in Maycomb because he's colored, in my opinion, no human being should be treated like they're a nonentity. The situation could've been handled in a better way, but since he was colored, he “deserved” it. On the other hand, this novel could be about love because the family became more close. When Jem was maimed, the family knitted together. Although this may be true, it's still wrong because it shouldn't take your loved one to be wounded in order for them to come together. The family should be close at all times, not only when an incident happen. Another thing that shows love is when Atticus defended Tom Robinson. Atticus had heart and he knew that Robinson was innocent. Love is when you try to help someone. However, if he really loved him then he would've fought for Tom Robinson and he wouldn't have went to

In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the love story between Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson is obvious. This is evidenced when Atticus is confronted by Scout about his reason for defending Robinson if it caused disapproval of him and their family from many, “...if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again”(Lee 76). First, this shows Atticus executing one aspect of agape—he acknowledged that he is connected to a man he barely knew and this connections would mean his inaction would be detrimental to himself. Indeed, if he were not to act in defence for his “brother”, as King would refer to people on earth being brothers to each other,…

Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird and The Black Eyed Peas’ song “Where is the Love” both tackle the problem of racism and overall intolerance of others. Lee’s novel takes place in the 1930s and focuses on the Finch family as the father, Atticus, takes on a case where he is defending a black man from the accusation of a white man and women. On the other hand, “Where is the Love” addresses discrimination as a whole and seems to question your empathy for other people. When placed side by side, these two works have many common themes that reflect the major problems these works are trying to address. In both pieces, the writers emphasize that these problems are closer than they might seem; both also emphasize the fact that people could face…

According to French novelist George Sand, “There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.” What Sand means by this is that loving others and being loved is what causes happiness in life. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird explores this idea by weaving examples of love through a young girl named Scout’s life. The novel takes place in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Scout and her older brother Jem grow up in the midst of a racist community, where blacks are discriminated.…

Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, in an interview, described the acclaimed novel as a “simple love story.” Initially, I had strongly disagreed with this statement, because I presumed Harper Lee was referring to a romantic love. However, I shortly realized that Harper Lee was referring to a different type of love. What Harper Lee refers to is not the traditional romantic love typically associated with novels, but more of a selfless, benevolent love. This unconditional, self-sacrificing love is known as agape.…

Love blossoms like a flower. There are so many different ways and places for the flowers to prosper, just like how love is found in many quantities all around the world. Flowers are often hidden away, like in someone’s backyard where they can only be seen by a select few, just like how love is hidden from the view of some until they choose to open up their eyes a bit wider. After writing To Kill A Mockingbird (TKAM), the author, Harper Lee, when asked to describe her novel, portrayed it as “a love story, plain and simple.” After reading TKAM, a reader can infer that Lee didn’t refer to romantic love when she described her novel, but rather Scout and Jem’s love between siblings, or Atticus’s love of all people regardless of ethnicity.…

“Being loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage” (Tzu 41). The concept of courage stemming from brotherly love, as stated by Tzu, has been touched for many eons, even by contemporary writers and philosophers such as Dr. King and Harper Lee. King’s article, “An Experiment in Love”, describes the unity of all men and the powerful emotion of love. Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, details the adventures of Jem and Scout and how their father, Atticus, demonstrates wisdom and courage through defending To Robinson, an accused rapist. Martin Luther King Jr’s article, “An Experiment in Love”, corroborates that To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a love story by stating that the only way to solve the issue…

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare are classified as a fiction books. However, they reveal many truths about the human condition when it comes to prejudice and racism. In TKAM, we saw how racism took a life of an innocent Tom Robinson as a disease, and how prejudice about Boo Radley spread out in Maycomb. In the MOV we witnessed the religious prejudice (Christian vs. Shylock), and the racism against the Prince of Morocco with black skin. There is a connection to the real world, when some people see a Muslim person – they think about terrorism, not about how good this person can be.…
