Examples Of Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird

Improved Essays
Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” features a lot of discrimination against race, sex, and culture. As Bonnie Hammer once said, “Prejudice and discrimination based on our differences is an unfortunate fact of life”. It is very unfortunate and sad that discrimination is a common occurrence all over the world. Discrimination is shown when the townspeople bullied Atticus’ children for him defending Tom Robinson. It is also shown when Mr. Dolphus Raymond has to pretend to be drunk so he won’t be judged for marrying a black woman.

Atticus was the defendant of Tom Robinson for his trial, which caused some criticism against him. People around town who disapproved of Atticus defending Tom Robinson would take it out on Scout and Jem by saying terrible things about Atticus to them. Mrs. Dubose said that their “father’s no better than the … and trash he works for!”(Ch. 11). Even their cousin, Francis, picks fights with Scout over it. He says “I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a ...-lover”(Ch. 9). Atticus was right to defend Tom Robinson, even if it caused people to be rude to him and his children.

There they meet Mr. Dolphus Raymond. He pretends to be drunk so that people would have a reason for him to be kind to black people, but in reality, he drinks Coca-Cola. Dolphus drinks because people don’t understand that black people are people too, and that being married to a black woman is not something to be ashamed of. Dolphus is jaded by the hypocrisy of white society, and prefers living among black people. He is married to a black woman, who he has had several children with. He said “When I come to town… if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond's in the clutches of whiskey—that's why he won't change his ways. He can't help himself, that's why he lives the way he

Atticus sets a good example to Scout and Jem because he believes everyone is equal and; therefore, Tom Robinson is black, it doesn't mean he can't defend him. For example, Atticus tells Scout many times that if he didn't defend Tom Robinson he wouldn't tell Jem or Scout not to do something. He has to set a good example for his children and if he expects them to do something or follow certain values, then he must display them first. In the book Atticus says, "The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” This quote proves that whatever Scout or Jem believe in they have to stand up for it.…

The famous children's novel and winner of the Pulitzer Award, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how blacks were treated back in the 1930s, and really, during that entire era. This story is about injustice and racism towards the so called “negroes”. A white man named Atticus Finch is given the task to defend a black man accused of rape, and acts as his lawyer. This is not easy for Atticus or his family, as they are repeatedly taunted and made fun of for taking the side of the African-American, something that was considered absurd back in the day. This alone just makes you wonder how it would be to roam the streets in a different colored skin.…

People Mrs. Maudie in chapter 11 degrade him by comment to scout and Jem as they passes her house, “Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!”(105) Because of what Mrs. Maudie said, it strongly implements that racism is still around and proves that she thinks of blacks like trash and those who associate with them, the same or worst. Atticus nevertheless took the Tom’s case, even though he knew it was dangerous for him and his family, he will not follow the worldly thought of segregation. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme is how racial discrimination happened in daily life around that era and how sometimes it still happens today. Many white southerners treated African American people like they were animals and never got the same treatment as white people because of their skin color. “There are one kind of folks, folks” (Lee 304). That statement represents the inequality that happened in that era that still happens in some ways today.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…
