Discrimination is something that can happen anywhere in the world. The majority is white people discriminating colored people because they are different. Colored people do not fight back because they have gone through it and do not discriminate. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird displays discrimination just like it is in the real world. The fact that the majority of white people in Maycomb discriminate and black people do not suggests that one discriminates because they have not been discriminated. Predominantly, multiple white people in To Kill a Mockingbird discriminate. One of them is the sheriff,“The sheriff hadn’t the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement”(14). The sheriff could not possibly mix Boo with colored people because he would be doing a disgrace to white people. The sheriff does not know how it would feel if someone else told him not to be with someone. Another person that discriminates is Jem,“‘Why don’t you get a colored man”(98)? One colored person that does not discriminate is Calpurnia,“‘How’d you and Mister Jem like to come to church with me tomorrow’”(156)? The church that Calpurnia goes to is for colored people and is very old. However, this does not stop her from bringing Atticus’s kids to this church because she does not discriminate and believes that the church should be for anyone to come. Another person is Tom Robinson,“‘I picks for Mr.Link Deas’...‘and one day she asked me to come inside the fence and bust up a chiffarobe for her’...‘She give me the hatchet and I broke up the chiffarobe’”(255). All the people that Tom Robinson does good stuff for are white people and that does not stop him to work for them because they are white and he is colored.
