When Germany invaded and controlled the Netherlands, they set up the Gestapo, a brutal political police force. Their job was to administer laws that isolated the Jews and inflicted harsh treatment upon them. The Gestapo was present in the text when Anne had a nightmare about them. She told her father that in her dream, they came and grabbed her and dragged her out of the Secret Annex. This shows that the Gestapo connected the characters emotionally.
