In the film, similarly to Shakespeare, the transformation of Othello, Sax represents discrimination due to racial difference as unjust and prejudiced. The film demonstrates Othello in a twentieth century contest, when the conflict between riots and police ends up in the death of Billy Coates. Through the characterization of Othello as a man who responds to a violent and passionate crowd of rioters in a calm, rational and civilized manner, the unjust and prejudiced perspective of racial difference in the society is distributed directly to the audience.
