Patterns of Discrimination Throughout American History
Throughout the course of American history, one thing that, unfortunately, seems to be a theme is the act of discrimination. Since Columbus came to America in 1492 continuing through the centuries our country has evolved and shaped into modern day 2016. We have overcome major prejudices however with each turn of acceptance, comes a new form of refusal. Our country’s history in regards to racism can be described through Native Americans VS Europeans, Slavery VS White Privilege during the Civil War and most recently LGBQT VS The “Norm.”
Native Americans VS Europeans

Since the beginning of slavery our country has fought hard for equality. Upon many influential people to stop discrimination, one who sticks out is Brooker Washington, famous for his fight for the end to slavery but at the same time his appeal to the white slave owners. During the "Atlanta Compromise" speech he tells his audience "In all things that are purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress."(Washington 1895) Washington was a leader during the beginning of the reconstruction era and was mostly speaking to white men, his compromise was the idea that African Americans should be hired and not seen as objects but people. Another spokesperson for African Americans was W.E.B Du Bois, who fought against Washington's idea’s, he wanted a a ban on segregation. The idea of having a separating line between the two races wasn’t ideal. Black and white should be seen as the same, not one higher or different than the other.
