Interestingly, as she describes each action that he took, she blames that action on some attribute of the woman he was involved with. Throughout the entirety of the song, there is a dearth of any information that could put the “other woman” at fault, such as her knowing that the man pursuing her at the bar is in a relationship, or that she was making a conscious decision to intervene in someone else’s relationship. In other words, the “other woman” was viewed as an object for sex and aggression, even by Underwood herself. This is not an uncommon theme in country music, as mostly male, but occasionally female singers, often include themes of men ‘playing the field,’ in search of sexual encounters, and women as sexual prizes, not to mention sexual violence and nonconsensual sex, all of which can be found in the “Before He Cheats” lyrics (van Oosten et al., 2015). While such themes are now being identified and challenged in modern entertainment, this song has not been a part of this movement, mainly because it is a woman negatively targeting another woman.…

In an article titled “The Psychology of Revenge” a study was done by phycologists Kevin M. Carlsmith, Timothy D. Wilson, and Daniel T. Gilbert to show the effects revenge truthfully have on people. “People tend to believe that retribution of some kind effectively releases the tension and anger someone feels toward the transgressor and his action, and that payback helps to assuage negative emotions, supplanting them with positive ones”(Streep). It is most common for people to believe that revenge helps a person move on, however this is not what the psychologists found: “It wasn’t just that punishing the transgressor didn’t provide a release but, in fact, made participants focus on and ruminate about both the transgressor and the transgression more” (Streep). According to their study revenge does not help someone move forward it actually keeps them stuck in the…

If my life was a television show or a movie, the theme song I would chose would be “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. I chose this song because I feel like it best describes my attitude towards life and situations. The first impression I would want the audience to make about me would be that I have a happy spirit and I try to always stay positive and not let things bother me. I want people to see that although bad things can happen, it’s your attitude that gets you through and makes it better. I always say, the better the attitude, the better the situation.…
