“The Catcher In The Rye” is a novel most people can easily relate to . The main character, Holden Caulfield, is a very opinionated teenager. Nothing seems to be going right in his life. He is always complaining, as if his life were horrible. As a reader of the novel you don’t know whether to feel sorry for him or get annoyed by the fact that he can’t accept things. Throughout the novel, it becomes quite obvious that Holden is depressed. Depression is the state of feeling sad for a long period of time. In J.D Salinger’s, “The Catcher In The Rye”, it is shown how depression can affect a human being. Depression is an illness which many people suffer from. It prevents a person from enjoying life. There are many symptoms for this illness, but it affects everyone in a different way. The most common symptoms would be: Having trouble sleeping, sadness, hopelessness, the feeling of being unimportant, not interested in eating, and not having the energy to do everyday normal activities. Depression deprives a person from living life to the fullest. There can be many reasons as to why a person has depression. Life events such as a close relative or friend passing away or maybe the fact that nothing seems to be going right. It also depends on how a person 's childhood was like. There can be many different ways as to why a person as depression. Holden had negative thoughts about the world around and how nothing seemed to satisfy him. As you read on in the novel, it becomes clear that Holden has isolated himself and is more than likely to have depression. Depression affects a person’s life in many ways.
