Data Collection and Analysis This next step in an action research is the data collection and analysis. Data helps the researcher to gather information that will be used for a better understanding to the topic. The quality of the data is the main reason for the action as a result of the inquiry. It is beneficial to collect as many types of data this can be interviews, surveys or observation. By utilizing several types of methods and looking from different directions, this process is known as triangulating, which creates a balance of the phenomenon (Brighton & Moon, 2007). Kurt Lewin, was a social psychologist, that created the action research and was the first researchers to develop a model. His model described the process of decision-making that includes analysis, reconnaissance, problem reconceptulization, planning and implementation of social action, and evaluation (McClure, 2002). McClure, 2002, references three types of data collection in his article, interviewing, observation and questionnaires. The interviewing method is fact based where questions are asked and the participants’ responds. By conducting interviews, researchers obtain a clearer understanding of an individual’s background and experience (McClure, 2002). There are two types of interviews informal and formal. Informal interviews can be considered a conversation to draw out responses that can open up other unexpected paths. Formal interviews are more structured, planned, scheduled and prepared. This means the same questions in the same order will be used for all the participants involved. A useful the tools used for this type of interviews is questionnaires or scales and can be writing or oral. There are things to consider when using interviews, how long should it be and how long should it take. A 90 minute interview should be enough time to get the information needed to conduct the research because they need to be planned intervals of three days to a week in between interviews to establish and maintain
