Hawthorne uses imagery to illustrate characteristics of dark romanticism by his diction throughout the excerpt. For example when he says “heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes” gives me the image of something dark and dangerous and seems like a dark scary place to go which is an example of dark romanticism because when you think of dark romanticism it gives you the image of something that's not very light and something that would creep you out. Another example is the black flower, this is an example of dark romanticism because the color black would usually represent death or anything else like that.
