How controlling can a husband be? In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tom Buchanan exerts constant control over his wife Daisy, even though they are in a loveless marriage. Their loveless marriage begins to fall apart even further after Daisy learns of Tom’s mistress. The book, which is narrated by a man named Nick Carroway tells the story of a man named Gatsby who works very hard and becomes very rich in order to gain back the love of Daisy. He throws extravagant parties with illegal alcohol in an attempt to get Daisy back. Gatsby uses Nick as a way to get closer to Daisy, and they eventually end up having an affair. Daisy plans to leave Tom for Gatsby, but Gatsby is so rudely murdered by the husband of Tom’s mistress. Characterization
