Cultural Imperialism is a term which used to describe the phenomena of dominance of western culture by media. In this process third world countries are bound to adopt the culture of dominant nations. Thus local or national culture of a country starts vanishing of disappearing.
Cultural imperialism is best defined by Herbert Schiller. He gave this theory in 1973 and states that “the concept of cultural imperialism today best describes the sum of the processes by which a society is brought into the modern world system and how its dominating stratum is attracted, pressured, forced, and sometimes bribed into shaping social institutions to correspond to, or even promote the values and structures of the dominating center …show more content…
So culture is all about daily life. In the past daily life of locals were changed by different invaders and rulers. Now media is changing life of inhabitants. Our media content is basically the result of media imperialism. We have many changes in our routine life. From the dusk till dawn our habits are changed. In past we prefer to use Miswak but now tooth brushes and pastes took over this. Our eating system is also altered. Now we have fast foods, bakery itoms common in our menu and in our kitchens. Beauty standards are also changed. Media tells us that what is beauty! Every women is trying hard to achieve size zero and want to have a fair complexion. On the other hands Men are starving for six packs. We are now celeberating festivals which even did not belonges to here. Birthdays, valentines day, mother’s day, father’s day celeberation is now common in our culturem and media is presenting all these events as our own and too important. Infact many festivals which were part of our culture now no more celeberated on different grounds. Basant is now banned due to different reasons; same is the case with Urs and Mailas of different saints and religious figures. Our dress code is also changing as a result of cultural imperialism. Our dressing is also changed. Jeans is a common feature in every nook and cranny. Different new customs and traditions now took place in our weddings which is purely a result of media …show more content…
We have different kinds of architecture like Turkish, Persian, Indian, British and American architecture. New housing schemes are adopting western architecture style. They have open kitchen system, a terrace, different kinds of lounges and rooms. We prefer different kinds of western items in our house. This is all due to cultural imperialism. Media tells us that a house with western outlook is the symbol of a successful life. And we are bound to adopt all these things. These are some examples of cultural imperialism in our society. It is an alarming situation that we are losing our local culture so we should protect it by using some measures. Our media should give us such content which is purely local. We have our own beauty standards so we’ll have to promote them. We should not feel any kind of embarrassment to promote our local festivals, foods, norms and values through media. If we fail to do so, then upcoming generations will have no idea that how beautiful our culture
