“Once you understand and appreciates other people’s cultural backgrounds, then you also connect with them more.” This anonymous is an example of what should be going on in America but the total opposite is occurring. Cultural appropriation is a concept which the use of parts of one culture by members of a different culture as a largely negative phenomenon. Today in America there are so many incidents of this and I disagree with this because it keeps happening to African Americans this has happened with Rachel Dolezal, black face parties and white people using black hairstyles and changing the names of them. Rachel Dolezal is a perfect example of cultural appropriation because her situation was so controversial on the news. Dolezal was a woman …show more content…
Many instances in history black people have been made fun of for how dark their skin is but white people want to now take on this skin color they made fun of for so long. Kylie Jenner, Julianne Hough and many other people decided to do this. Kylie Jenner thought this was innocent picture by the photographer whom she was posing for but everyone else thought. Jenner captioned the pictured on Instagram with the caption “What I wish I looked like all the time thank you @marcelocantuphoto @joycebonelli” (Ishler). Jenner on the other claimed this picture was from the black lights and neon lights being mixed together at a photo shoot which as you can see is false from the looks of the picture she appears to wearing makeup. This is seen when you look at the way the lights hit her face she has on a very dark makeup which is obvious. This is an example of cultural appropriation because they are deciding to make fun of black people and their skin color even though they thought they were doing this innocently for Hough it was her Halloween costume in 2014 she wanted to portray the character from the popular Netflix show called Orange is the New Black. Hough also brings me to my next point of non-African American people trying to take other parts of our …show more content…
This makes a big difference to when people say you should wear something because it disrespects another culture. Rachel Dolezal, black face and the hairstyles are all things I didn’t pay attention to. Rachel Dolezal cause a big controversy along with the back face costumes and photoshoot that was done with Kylie Jenner in it. The hairstyle was something that was minor in the eyes of other but to me this was a big punch in the face to African Americans because they weren’t given credit for what they had done. Cultural Appropriation is another issue that people need to tackle no matter what group of people it is happening to. Which leaves me to close out on this “Shame and dissociation, denial of difference and of white privilege, the unconscious desire to be an oedipal winner, and to avoid being an oedipal loser” (Graff) White people love to use others to feel like they’ve won without winning they use the creations and down play people when trying to get to the

During the 19th Century If People see you with the black skin, they most likely to think that you’re worthless and don’t know how to do anything. If People see you with the white skin, then they probably think you have all the money in the world and you’re smarter than other people, just because you have light colored skin. “White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…

In the book The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, George Lipsitz explains the psychological brainwash of superiority of the white man using the term whiteness. According to Lipsitz, “The power of whiteness depended not only on white hegemony over separated racialized groups, but also on manipulating racial outsiders to fight against each other, to compete with each other for white approval, and to seek the rewards and privileges of whiteness for themselves at the expense of other racialized populations.” (Lipsitz,…
