Metaphors allows workers to gain a better understanding of the key priorities of their organisation (Hughes & Wearing, 2013). Hughes and Wearing (2013) state that there are eight different metaphors these are unpacking and collecting, fluid and hyper-real, constructed other, flux, domination, lenses, machines, constructions and organisms. These metaphors are separated into either upstream and downstream thinking. There are advantages and disadvantages to many of these metaphors and the way of thinking. For example, an advantage of the metaphor “organisms”; some human service organisations may be seen as ‘living organisms’’ which adapt and change with their environment (funding). However, this metaphor does strongly focus on adaptability, thus a disadvantage would be the neglect of the aspects such as values and policies. Schmid (2004), suggests that Human Service Organisations (HSO’s) rely on resources such as funding, assets, legitimation and recognition. If a program or job position is up for question, refunding is required in order for it to continue. The organisation will need to reapply for refunding either through applications or reports to funding bodies highlighting their key aspects and the benefits of the program or job position.
