Courtly love is falling in love with a person and not being able to confess that love. “The Knight’s Tale” is a part of The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, and is all about this concept. While on the journey to Canterbury, the knight shares his tale conveying the true identity of courtly love; it manipulates the power it has to control and ultimately ruin lives. He show this through the story of how two cousins fall in love with a woman during their life imprisonment.
Arcita and Palamon, the two cousins, are fighting over the women Emilia. While Arcita and Palamon were falling in love with Emilia, Theseus, the brother-in-law, built an amphitheater to settle this argument. The Temple of Venus which was used as an amphitheater

Along with that, this quote shows how the battle field enhances the terrible feelings of love, and it depicts the suffering that comes with love, especially courtly love. Stating “broken slumbers and the sighing cold” could be taken literally to describe the walls of the temple, but could also be taken figuratively. The “broken slumbers” could be about the heart torn into broken pieces, while the “sighing cold” could be about being all alone with no one to return your love. As this is to say the Temple of Venus is where love has the ability to draw someone to become broken and cold, and not able to receive love; just go into deep depression. The phrase “sacred tears” was also a key idea to understanding how courtly love ruins lives. By having tears run down the face as the heart bleeds with sorrow because of love, all the while being in the Temple of Venus, who is the goddess of love, the word sacred can be interpreted literally saying the tears were made holy, pure and meaningful by Venus. “Fiery throbbing” is a perfect word chose for this situation. Clearly, the throbbing is killing both of the cousins from the inside out and all that is wanted is to be desired back, but not being able to have that burns right to the heart. Lastly, the mention of “love’s servant” personify love as a ruler and everyone else as the lonely servants, who must do anything and everything that love says to do, no matter the extent of

The title itself is indicative of an oxymoron, how can someone sweet hurt one and could could something torturous be sweet? The single phrase shows how even though the hands are preventing the narrator from thriving, the narrator is still in love with the person during them harm. In the Millers Tale, love is purely physical, and replaced by list rather than spirituality, ideals, and romance. There is a distinction between the love triangles presented in both tales. One where Palomon and Arcite demonstrate chivalry to win the love of Emily, and the other where Nicholas and Absolon are fulfilled with desire, and the desperate need to have Alisoun in bed. In The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, the “Knight's Tale” shows that love is greater than any other power. Chaucer composed the tale to convey the idea that love brings about unforeseen outcomes.…
