Scout learns how to be a lady from her aunt Alexandra. Aunt Alexandra throws a tea party for her all of her missionary circle friends. While all of them talk. aunt Alexandra sees Scout and invites her to have refreshments with them. Scout joins them and starts talking with all of the other ladies. However, during the conversation Atticus walks in and asks to talk with Alexandra and the maid, Calpurnia; Scout and Miss Maudie follow them into the kitchen. He tells them that his previous client, Tom Robinson has died after being shot because he was trying to escape from jail. In shock, aunt Alexandra starts to cry. Atticus asks Calpurnia to go with him to tell Tom’s wife about his death. After they leave, aunt Alexandra realizes that she still has guests in the dining room and composes herself. Scout follows her lead and they head back out to the dining room. Aunt Alexandra starts talking with the ladies again. Then she looks across the room at Scout and nods toward a plate of cookies. Scout picks up the tray, offers a cookie to one of the ladies, and thinks, “After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I.”(p.318) Scout has realized that sooner or later she has to become a lady like her aunt. Scout becomes a lady by being learning to compose herself after a tragedy. Instead of breaking down and crying she pulls herself together and keeps going on as if nothing had ever happened.
