When Atticus makes the decision to defend tom Robertson with his charges of rape against Mayella Ewell, he knows that he will be exposing himself and his family to difficult times within their prejudice town, this showed Atticus’s moral courage. When the lynch mob confronted Atticus at the jail where tom Robertson was being held, Atticus didn’t show any fear for himself the only time he showed it was when his children came. Atticus shows bravery by protecting Tom’s life by risking his own which is a part of his courageous personality. One of the main parts in the novel where Atticus shows physical courage was when he had to kill the rabid dog, although he hadn’t fired a gun in years and he was against the use guns he still shot the dog because knowing if he misses disaster will result. A continuing theme throughout the novel of Atticus showing courage was the upbringing of his son and especially his daughter, scout. Lee’s portrayal of Ms Dubose initially left readers disliking her, but later in the novel her tremendous courage was shown. Ms Dubose was a morphine addict and was trying to quit before she died. When Ms Dubose dies Atticus revels to his children that “she was the bravest person I ever knew” because of her rude comments too Atticus, this was surprising to readers for him to say this, but really it shows the amount of respect he has for her. As sick as Ms Dubose was, it would have made sense to continue taking morphine to dull the pain, but she didn’t because she was determine to break her addiction before she died, enduring this all quietly and mostly alone, showing her physical and moral courage and bravery in the face of
