Courageous or Fearful???
Throughout the book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, written by Jamie Ford, Henry the main character displays courage even though he is scared. As stated by Lou Gehring,
" Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and doing it anyway." For example, he walks Keiko home from school every day to the Japanese side of town where he isn't accepted and he disobeys his father in order to stand up for his own dreams. Henry also displays courage when he is older when he searches through the Panama Hotel for Keiko's possessions and when he reunites with Keiko. Henry was "afraid and did it anyway" during many circumstances and went through a lot of challenges in life such as befriending a Japanese girl

Henry knows that his father will not let him befriend Keiko, a Japanese girl. As stated, “ The sum total of Henry’s Japanese friends happened to be a number that rhymed with hero… My father would fall over dead, he thought. And in town, someone would see us” (20-23). This shows that Henry is scared and there is a fear of what his father might do to him, yet he is nice and befriends her anyways. Henry takes it so far that he even decides to walk her home to her side of town, even though his father had told him that the Japanese are very dangerous and he was sure that someone would see them. When Henry speaks to and is nice to Keiko, there is a fear present but he used bravery and courage to speak to her …show more content…
Henry had a hard childhood with many difficult challenges and he was scared to revisit this and bring it back into his life. Henry had a hard time leaving Keiko but he still reminds himself of these memories in order to be brave and search through the Panama Hotel. Henry also takes his son Marty and his fiancé Samantha to help look for his lost record by Oscar Holden which brings back fearful memories. When Henry receives the letter from Keiko with the record he is nervous. In Ford’s words, “Henry folded the letter with trembling hands, unable to continue. He had had a hard time revealing the true nature of what was found in the dusty basement of the Panama Hotel that day” (280). This shows that Henry was scared and did have a hard time revisiting the Panama Hotel, yet he still mustered up the courage to go meet Keiko. When he meets Keiko again he is scared but he also acts with courage. Henry has huge fears about searching the Panama Hotel and reuniting with Keiko but he acts courageously and does it
